Liz Poulin Alvarez, Featured Artist Show “Canine Companions”

The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring “Canine Companions” a collection of paintings of dogs in the landscape. The show will be on exhibit from November 1-November 24, 2024.

Liz returned to the Central California Coast with her family in 2014 after living in New Zealand and New Mexico.  A Maine native, Liz was trained by her first art teacher to view the natural world with a colorist's eye. Painting the New England landscape outdoors in all weather conditions trained her to view the shadows and muted tones in the environment. Liz earned a BFA degree from the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD), a Teacher Credential in Art at UC Santa Barbara and an MFA degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, in Auckland New Zealand. Her regional surroundings and international travels influence the variety of media she uses including oil, acrylic, watercolor, and charcoal.

Canine Companions is a collection of paintings celebrating dogs in their environment. Who can resist seeing your furry companion’s tail wagging as you prepare for an adventure, whether it’s taking your beloved pet to the beach or a stroll around the neighborhood? This collection spans many decades and is a tribute to dogs that have passed away and to dogs currently in my life that enhance the experience of being in a place. Movement and color epitomize what our canine companions bring to our world.

Liz enjoys bringing her dog along while painting on location. Using the alla prima technique with a high-key color palette, she emphasizes distinct shadow shapes. A loose brush stroke evokes the immediacy of the movement. Human adventures are shared with our canine companions in their environment.

Liz is a member of The Lompoc Valley Art Association, the Santa Barbara Art Association, The California Art Club and S.C.A.P.E. (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment.) She balances her artmaking with teaching art full-time at a local high school.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local animal shelter.
