Featured Artist Show, Glory in the Flower, with Artist Vicki Andersen

Hollyhock Splash

The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring "Glory in the Flower", an artist show by Vicki Andersen.   The show will be on exhibit from April 1 through April 24, 2022.

Vicki is a California native but as an Air Force “brat” traveled quite a bit & still loves to travel.  A gift of an easel, oils, brushes, for her 16th birthday started her love of the arts.  She graduated from California State College Long Beach with a BA in Illustration.  She moved to Lompoc in 1979 where her husband established his solo medical practice & they raised 4 children.

Besides creating and showing her own artwork, Vicki has been active in promoting the arts in Lompoc.  She is a founding member of Gallery Los Olivos and the Cypress Gallery in Lompoc.  She was awarded the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission "Leadership in the Arts" award in 2017.  Currently serving as Project Administrator of Lompoc's Mural Project, she has also painted several murals in the community.

Vicki says, “The title for this show was taken from a poem by William Wordsworth...

"Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass,
of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind.."

 I have long loved those lines and it seemed a fitting title for a show that is mostly flowers.  It also includes a smaller embedded show "Lost Fields"  with images of the vanished flower fields of Lompoc.

There is no deep hidden meaning in my paintings.  The truth is I love color and the effects of (sun)light on a subject.  I work mostly in acrylic and use as large a paint brush as I can or often a palette knife.  I work quickly and don't like to mess with lots of details, but rather capture the impression ... the light & color of a scene.  I like to see how much color I can capture in a scene which might appear quite dull to someone else's eye. An admirer of my work once told me he "heard music" when he looked at my paintings...Mozart in the garden scene etc!”

There will be a will be an artist’s reception on Saturday, April 2 from 1:00 to 3:00p.m.   The Cypress Gallery is at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc, across from the Museum.   The Cypress Gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm
